Biographical / Historical

From a typed note pasted on the page: "Beith, Alexander (1799-1891), divine; educated at Glasgow University; minister successively at Oban; Glasgow, Kilbrandon, Glenelg, and Stirling (1839-76); among founders of free church of Scotland, 1843; D.D. Princetown University, U.S.A., 1850; moderator of general assembly of free church, 1858; published pamphlets and religious works. [Suppl. i. 163]". From a second type note pasted on the page: "Beith, Alexander, D.D. Born at Campbeltown, 1799. Studied at Glasgow University. Ordained at Oban, 1822. Translated, 1824, to Hope Street, Glasgow; 1826, to the parish of Kilbrandon, Argyllshire; 1830, to Glenelg, Inverness-shire; and 1839, to Stirling. Married, 1825, Julia Robson. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. At the Disruption Dr. Beith left a church which had been built for him, and for the cost of which he and those who adhered to him were held responsible though no longer worshipping in it. In 1858 Dr. Beith was Moderator of the General Assembly, and thereafter retired to Edinburgh. Died, 1891. Publications.- A Gaelic Treatise on Baptism. The Two Witnesses Traced in History. Scottish Reformers and Martyrs. A Highland Tour with Dr. Candlish. Memories of Disruption Times. Sorrowing yet Rejoicing. Biographical Sketch of Rev. A Stewart, Cromarty, etc.".
