From a typed note pasted on the page: "Bell, Henry Glassford (1803-1874), sheriff; studied law at Edinburgh; started and conducted 'Edinburgh Literary Journal,' 1828; published a defence of Mary Queen of Scots, 1830; advocate, 1832; sheriff-substitute of Lanarkshire, 1839-67; sheriff-principal, 1867-1874; one of the originators of the Royal Scotch Academy; published miscellaneous works in verse and prose.
