Biographical / Historical

From a handwritten inscription on the page: "Professor in Aberdeen University and afrer 1843 in New College, Edinburgh A.C.F.". From a typed note pasted on the page: "Black, Alexander, D.D. (Aberdeen). Born at Aberdeen in 1789, educated at the University and Divinity Hall in his native town, and was ordained at Tarves, Aberdeenshire, 1818. In 1832 he was appointed Professor of Divinity in Marischal College, Aberdeen, and was sent by the Church of Scotland in 1839 on a mission of inquiry to the Jews. He signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. For some months he superintended the studies of the Free Church students in Aberdeen. In 1844 he was removed to the New College, Edinburgh, where he became Professor of New Testament Exegesis. He retired in 1856, and died in Edinburgh in 1864. Dr. Black was a man of vast erudition. It was said that he was able to converse in nineteen languages, and to correspond in twelve."
