From a typed note pasted on the page: "Blackie, John Stuart (1809-1895), Scottish professor and man of letters; educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Edinburgh University, Göttingen, and Berlin; studied for Scottish bar; advocate, 1834; appointed first regius professor of humanity (Latin) at Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1839, and installed, 1841; instituted 'Hellenic Society' Aberdeen, 1850; professor of Greek at Edinburgh, 1852-82; founded and endowed Celtic chair at Edinburgh, 1882. His publications include 'Faust... translated into English verse,' 1834; 'Lyrical Dramas of Aeschylus... translated into English Verse ,' 1850, 'Lays and Legends of Ancient Greece,' 1857, and many other works in verse and prose. [Suppl. i. 204]".
