From a typed note pasted on the page regarding Alexander Somerville: "Somerville, Alexander Neill, D.D. (Glasgow). Born at Edinburgh, 1813. Studied at the University, Edinburgh. Ordained at Anderston, Glasgow, 1837. Married, 1841, Isabella M. Ewing. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Became senior minister, 1877. Prior to this he had been one of the Church's deputies to Canada, and had also engaged in short evangelistic mission in Scotland, Spain, and India. When set free from regular pastoral work, Dr. Somerville devoted the rest of his life to a series of evangelistic tours throughout the world. He visited Australia and the neighbouring colonies, the Continent of Europe, South Africa, Asia Minor, and completed his labours by a special visit to the Jews in Eastern Europe. He was Moderator of the General Assembly in 1886, and during his year of office traversed as an evangelist the Highlands of Scotland. For the last nineteen years of his life the great Scottish evangelist was the representative of the Barony of Somerville, which fell dormant in 1870 at the death of the nineteenth Scottish peer, but he preferred no claim. Died, 1889. Publications.- Sacred Triads, Doctrinal and Practical, chiefly for the use of Young Persons. Posthumous.- A Modern Apostle: Alexander N. Somerville, D.D. By George Smith, C.I.E., LL.D." Ordained, 1826, at Lady Glenorchy's Chapel, Edinburgh. Married, 1827, Elizabeth Bonar. Translated, 1830, to Jedburgh. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Died, 1877.
