From a typed note pasted on the page: "Burce, John, D.D. (Aberdeen). Born in the manse of Forfar, 1794. Studied at the Universities, Aberdeen and St. Andrews. Ordained at Guthrie, Forfarshire, 1818. Translated, 1830, to the New North, Edinburgh; and, 1837, to St. Andrew's, Edinburgh. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Married, 1836, Marjory Ramsay; and, 1845, Susan Abercrombie. Became senior minister, 1870. As a preacher, Dr. Bruce had a success in some respects unique. His discourses, closely read with a strong Forfarshire accent, were pervaded by a Miltonic splendour of conception and majesty of diction. Students of the greatest intellectual power were attracted by his preaching, and his ministry proved helpful to men who otherwise stood in no friendly relation to the Christian Church. Died, 1880. Publication.- Lectures on Samson and on Gideon. A volume of Sermons , with a Memoir by Dr. J. C. Burns."
