Ordained, 1800, at Dun, near Brechin, where his eldest brother James had been settled shortly before. Married, 1806, Elizabeth Chalmers. Translated, 1821, to Kilsyth. His ministry there prepared the way for the awakening of 1839, in which his son, W. C. Burns, afterwards of China, took so prominent a part. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Became senior minister, 1853. Died, 1859. His life was written by his son, Dr. Islay Burns, under the title, The Pastor of Kilsyth."
