From a typed note pasted on the page: "Candlish, Robert Smith, D.D. (Princeton, 1841. Edinburgh, 1865). Born in Edinburgh, 1806. son of James Candlish, lecturer on medicine. Studied at the University, Glasgow. Ordained in St. George's, Edinburgh, 1834. Married, 1835, Jessie Brock. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. In 1847, after the death of Dr. Chalmers, Dr. Candlish was appointed Professor of Theology in the New College, Edinburgh. His congregation called Mr. Stewart of Cromarty, but before the call could be disposed of Mr. Stewart was in his grave. In these circumstances Dr. Candlish resigned his appointment as Professor and returned to his charge. In 1861 he was Moderator of the General Assembly. In 1862 he was appointed Principal of the New College, and discharged the duties of that office along with his pastoral work till his death. Next to Thomas Chalmers, Robert Smith Candlish was the chief instrument raised up in the Providence of God to expound and defend the principles, direct the spirit, and organise the structure and system of the Free Church of Scotland. To enumerate the services rendered by him to the State Church before the Disruption, and to the Free Church after that event, would be to recall the history of Scottish Ecclesiastical events from 1839 to the year of his death. He occupied what has been, since the pastorate of Dr. Andrew Thomson, the most conspicuous pulpit in Scotland. Amid his incessant work for the Church at large, he kept together an overflowing congregation of intelligent and appreciative men and women. Dr. Candlish's comprehensive intellect and catholic sympathies led him to take a large grasp of all Christian schemes and humanitarian movements, and to identify himself with all earnest and sincere efforts for their promotion. Died, 1873. Publications.-Besides many smaller works Dr. Candlish published: The Book of Genesis. The First Epistle of John On the Sonship and Brotherhood of Believers. The Fatherhood of God (Cunningham Lectures). Life in a Risen Saviour Scripture Characters The Christian Sacrifice . The Atonement. Reason and Revelation. Examination of Maurice's Theological Essays. On Elliot's Horae Apocalypticae, etc. Posthumous.- Life of Dr. R. S. Candlish. By William Wilson, D.D."
