From a typed note pasted on the page: "Cunningham, William Bruce. Born at Musselburgh, 1806. Studied at the University, Glasgow, and Divinity Hall, Edinburgh. Ordained, 1833, at Prestonpans. Married, 1834, Douglas, daughter of David Douglas, Lord Reston; and thereafter Cecilia Macdougall. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Died, 1878." From a pencil inscription on the page: "Inherited part of Adam Smith's library - an intimate friend of Archdeacon Hare, F.D. Maurice & Arthur Stanley - A.C.F."

William Bruce Cunningham's entry in the Fasti ecclesiae scoticanae (ed. 1915, vol. I, pp. 390-391) indicates that while he did marry Cecilia Margaret Douglas in 1834, they remained married until his death. The entry does not mention a second wife named "Cecilia Macdougall". His wife Cecilia Margaret Douglas was the daughter of David Douglas, Lord Reston (1769-1819), an heir of Adam Smith. Cecilia and her sister David [sic] Anne (married to Rev. James Bannerman) inherited Smith's library in 1847. David Anne and James Bannerman's son, David Douglas Bannerman, donated his share of the library to New College, Edinburgh in the late 19th century. In 1972 these books were transferred from New College Library to the Main Library, University of Edinburgh where they joined a further 32 volumes from Adam Smith's library among the library of Professor W. B. Hodgson.
