From a typed note pasted on the page: "Dodds, James (1812-1885), religious and general writer; studied at Edinburgh University; minister at Humbie in East Lothian, and, after joining the Free Church, at Dunbar, 1843-85; friend of Thomas Carlyle; published 'Famous Men of Dumfriesshire,' 'A Century of Scottish Church History,' and theological works and memoirs. [xv. 165]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Dodds, James S. Born at Annan, 1812. Studied at the University of Edinburgh. Ordained assistant and the successor at Humbie, Haddingtonshire, 1841. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Translated, 1844, to Belhaven Church, Dunbar, and on this being lost to the Free Church was instrumental in erecting the Free Church in Dunbar proper. Married, 1843, Barbara Ann Duncan. Died, 1885. Publications.- Scottish Church History from the Secession to the Disruption. Eminent Men of Dumfriesshire."
