From a typed note pasted on the page: "Etty, William (1787-1849), painter; srudied in the Royal Academy school ar Somerset House; first exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1811; travelled on the continent; made a great impression with 'Cleopatra,' 1821; R.A., 1828; sold his 'Joan of Arc' pictures for 2,500l. Some minor works are in National Gallery, London, and at South Kensington. [xviii. 45]".
