From a typed note pasted on the page: "Fleming, John (1785-1857), natualist; entered the presbyterian ministry and held charges at Bressay, Flisk, and Clackmannan; joined the free church, 1843; created D.D. of St. Andrews, 1814; appointed professor of natural philosophy, Aberdeen, 1834, of natural science at Edinburgh, 1845 (free Church College). He published 'Economical Mineralogy of the Orkney and Zetland Islands,' 'The Philosophy of Zoology' (1822), and 'British Animals' (1828). [xix. 279]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Fleming, John, D.D. (St Andrews). Born near Bathgate in 1785, and studied at Edinburgh University. He was ordained at Bressay, one of the Shetland Islands, in 1808; translated to Flisk, in Fife, in 1810; and in 1832 to Clackmannan. He married, in 1813, Melville, daughter of Andrew Christie of Cupar. In 1834 he received a presentation to the Chair of Natural Philosophy in King's College, Aberdeen. He sifned the Act of Separation and the Deed of Demission. In 1845 he was appointed to the chair of New Science in New College, Edinburgh. Dr. Fleming attained a distinguished position among the naturalists of Scotland. He became eventually the greatest Scottish zoologist of his day. He died at Edinburgh, 1857. Publications.- British Animals. The Philosophy of Zoology. Zoology article in The Bass Rock. Institutes of Science. The Lithology of Edinburgh. Numerous papers in scientific journals." From a pencil inscription on the page: "Professor of Natural Philosophy in Aberdeen University and after 1843 Professor of Natural History in New College, Edinburgh A.C.F."
