From a typed note pasted on the page: "Forbes, John, D.D. (St Andrew's), LL.D. (Glasgow). Born at Moulin, 1800. Studied at the University of St. Andrews. After being licensed by thge Presbytery of Perth, Dr. Forbes became Mathematical Master in Perth Academy. Ordained at Newington (Hope Park Chapel, Edinburgh), 1826. Translated, 1828, to the Outer High Church (St. Paul's), Glasgow. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Became senior minister, 1874. Giving the scanty lesiure of a city minister to the study, Dr. Forbes produced a book on a purely mathematical subject as original as any that has appeared in this country since the days of Napier of Merchiston. In the first Union negotiations Dr. Forbes identified himself with the "Constitutional party". Died, 1874. Publication.- The Differential and Integral Calculus."
