Biographical / Historical

From a typed note pasted on the page: "Gordon, Robert (1786-1853), Free church minister; D.D. Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1823; minister of the High Church, Edinburgh, 1830; supported non-intrustionists; as moderator of the general assembly, 1841, had to pronounce deposition of the Strathbogie ministers; seconded Thomas Chalmers [q. v.], 1842; left established church, 1843, followed by his congregation; contributed to the 'Edinburgh Encyclopaedia.' [xxii. 299]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Gordon, Robert, D.D. Born at Glencairn, 1786. Studied at the Universities, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. After being licensed, and before ordination, Mr. Gordon was mathematical assistant to the rector of Perth Academy. Ordained at Kinfauns, 1816. Married, the same year, Isabella Campbell. Translated, 1822, to Buccleuch Chapel, Edinburgh; 1824, to Hope Park Chapel; 1825, to the New North Chapel in Brighton Street; and, 1830, to the High Church Parish. Dr. Gordon became collector of the Widows' Fund, 1836, and was Moderator of Assembly, 1841. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. After the Disruption Dr. Gordon's charge as the Free High, at the head of the Mound. One of the Court of Session judges remarked of him - "The cause that claims Gordon must have good at its root." Died, 1853. Publications.- Articles on mathematical subjects in the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia. A volume of Sermons. Posthumous.- Christ as known to the Ancient Church; two volumes of Lectures."
