Biographical / Historical
From a typed note pasted on the page: "Gray, Andrew, M.A. Born at Aberdeen, 1805. Studied at Marischal College, Aberdeen. Ordained at Woodside Chapel-of-Ease, Aberdeen, 1831. Married, 1834, Barbara Cooper. Translated, to the West Church, Perth, 1836. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. At the commencement of the collision between the civil and ecclesiastical courts, Mr. Gray published a pamphlet, entitled The Conflict between Civil and Ecclesiastical Courts, in which he marked out those points that were favourable to the claims of the Non-Intrusionists; and not one of his lines of defence has been forced, nor has one of his positions been abandoned. When the fight was finished Mr. Gray was requested to write for the instruction of the young in the principles for which the Free Church had contended. This he did, casting his material into the form of a "Catechism," which has all the qualities of lucidity, cogency, and pithiness which characterised and rendered famous his earlier pamphlets. Died, 1861. Publications.- Mr. Gray was the author of numerous pamphlets of a controversial kind in addition to the publications mentioned above, e.g., Letter to and Correspondence with Duke of Argyll on 'Presbytery Examined.'. The Mary-Worship of Rome. Posthumous.- Gospel Contrasts and Parallels: Sermons, with Memoir."
