From a typed note pasted on the page: "Guthrie, Thomas, D.D. (Edinburgh). Born, 1803. Son of David Guthrie, Provost of Brechin. Studied at the Universities, Edinburgh and Paris. Ordained at Arbirlot, Forfarshire, 1830. Married, the same year, Anne Burns. Translated, 1837, to Old Greyfriars', Edinburgh. In 1840 he entered the new church of St. John's, a parish formed from Old Greyfriars', to carry out the territorial principle. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. He became minister of Free St. John's, 1843; in 1850 he divided his ministerial work with Dr. Hanna; and in 1863 became minister emeritus- the year after he had been Moderator of the General Assembly. Dr. Guthrie was never "out of harness" till he lay down to die. It is beyond our power and limits to record all the services Dr. Guthrie rendered his Church before and after the Disruption. As the result of one year's labour he reported £116,370 as gathered for the Manse Scheme. From homeless ministers his exertions turned to houseless children. The effect of his Plea for Ragged Schools was electric, and he became identified with the movement personally in his own city, and in name and influence throughout the country. From a very early date, before there was any collective general movement in favour of Presbyterian Union, Dr. Guthrie publicly expressed the desire that the matter of incorporation in the case of the United Presbyterian and Free Churches should be taken up and carried out. Died, 1873. Publications.- The Gospel in Esekiel. Plea for Ragged Schools. Plea for Drunkards and against Drunkenness. The City: its Sins and Sorrows. Christ, the Inheritance of Saints. The Way to Life. Man and the Gospel. Sundays Abroad. Our Father's Business. Out of Harness. Speaking to the Heart. Studies of Character from the Old Testamentm First and Second Series. Posthumous.- Autobiography of Thomas Guthrie, D.D., and Memoir, by his sons David and Charles; also Life, in the "Famous Scots Series," by Oliphant Smeaton. Parables of our Lord read in the Light of the Present Day, with prefatory Memoir by Lord Guthrie."
