From a typed note pasted on the page: "Guthrie, Thomas (1803-1873), preacher and philanthropist; studied at Edinburgh, subsequently in Paris; minister of Arbirlot, 1830-7, Old Greyfriars, Edinburgh, 1837-40, St. John's, 1840-64; joined Free church, 1843, followed by most of his congregation; moderator, 1862; D.D. Edinburgh, 1849; the apostle of raggged schools; platform speaker in cause of temperance; first editor of 'Sunday Magazine,' 1864-73; published 'Plea for Ragged Schools,' 1847-9, 'Plea on behalf of Drunkards' 1851, and devotional works. [xxiii. 380]".
