Born at Troqueer, in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, 1803, and having studied at Edinburgh University and Theological Hall, was ordained at Torphichen, Linlithgowshire, in 1836. Married Jessie, daughter of Rev. Dr. Meek, Hamilton. Having signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, he was translated to St. Andrews in 1844, where in addition to his pastoral duties he had charge of the Free Church students attending the University. He directed them in their studies and advised them with regard to their work. In 1848 he was called to St. Paul's, Edinburgh, and in 1857 was appointed to the Chair of Apologetics and Systematic Theology in Free Church College, Glasgow. In 1862 Dr. Hetherington was laid aside from public duty by a stroke of paralysis. As one of the leaders under Chalmers of the Disruption movement, arduous labour fell upon Dr. Hetherington, both as minister and professor, in organising the educational side of the Free Church. He started and for four years edited the Free Church Magazine, and made copious contribuitions to the pamphlet literature of the Ten Years' Conflict. Died, 1865. Publications.- History of the Church of Scotland. History of the Westminster Assembly. The Apologetics of the Christian Faith."
