From a typed note pasted on the page: "Knox, Robert (1791-1862), anatomist and ethnologist; educated at Edinburgh High School; M.D. Edinburgh, 1814; assistant-surgeon in the army, 1815-32; made scientific researches at the Cape, 1817-20; conservator of the museum of comparative anatomy and pathology, Edinburgh College of Surgeons, 1825-31; anatomical lecturer at Edinburgh, 1826; unpopular after 1836 for heterodoxy and for procuring from the 'resurrectionists' his 'subjects' for dissection; fellow of the London Ethnological Society, 1860; honorary curator of its museum, 1862; distinguished anatomical teacher; author of medical works.
