From a typed note pasted on the page: "Liston, Robert (1794-1847), sugeon; son of Henry Liston [q. v.]; entered Edinburgh University, 1808; assistant to Dr. John Barclay (1758-1826) [q. v.]; house-surgeon at Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, 1814-16; M.R.C.S., 1816; worked in Edinburgh as teacher of anatomy and operating surgeon, 1818-28; surgeon to the hospital attached to the London University, 1834; professor of clinical surgery, University College, London, 1835; F.R.S. 1841; a skilful operator; best known in connection with the 'Liston splint'; chief works, 'The Elements of Surgery,' 1831-2, and 'Practical Surgery,' 1837. [xxxiii. 357]".
