Biographical / Historical

From a typed note pasted on the page: "Macdonald, John, (1779-1849), called the 'Apostle of the North'; M.A. King's College, Aberdeen, 1801; ordained missionary minister, 1806; visited Ireland, 1824; joined the secession party, 1843; author of sermons, published 1830, and a volume of Gaelic verse, 1848. [xxxv. 41]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Macdonald, John, D.D. Born at Reay, 1779. Studied at King's College, Aberdeen. Ordained, 1806, at Berriedale. Married, the same year, Georgina Ross; and, 1818, Janet MacKenzie. Translated, 1807, to what was then the Gaelic Chapel of Edinburgh; and, 1813, to Ferintosh (Urquhart). Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Dr. Macdonald's evangelistic labours were richly blessed. During his lifetime there were great spiritual movements at MutHill, Urquhart, Lochtayside, Glenlyon, Kilsyth, and Dundee; in all these he took deep interest, and rendered notable service. At the Disruption he preached the first sermon in Tanfield Hall. When the Free Church Assembly met in Inverness in 1845 he was associated as Gaelic Moderator with Dr. M'Farlan of Greenock. Died, 1849. Publications.- Posthumous.-The 'Apostle of the North': the Life and Labours of the Rev. Dr. Macdonald. By the Rev. J. Kennedy, Dingwall."
