Biographical / Historical

From a typed note pasted on the page: "MacFarlan, Jogn (d. 1846); Scottish advocate; brother of Patrick Macfarlan [q. v.]; friend of Sir Walter Scott; author of two religious pamphlets. [xxxv. 73]. Macfarlan, Patrick (1780-1849), Scottish divine; brother of John Macfarlann [q. v.]; licensed, 1803; joined secessionists, 1843; moderator of the free general assembly, 1845; published religious works. [xxxv. 73]". From another typed note pasted on the page: "M'Farlan, Patrick, D.D. (Glasgow). Born in the Canongate of Edinburgh (of which parish his father was minister), 1781. Ordained at Kippen, 1806. Translated to Polmont, 1810; 1824, to Glasgow, St. John's, as sucessor to Dr. Chalmers; 1825, to St. Enoch's Glasgow; and, 1832, to the West Parish of Greenock, at that time the richest living in Scotland. Dr. M'Farlan was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1834 when the Veto Act was passed. Signed the Act of Separation of Deed of Demission. In 1845 he was Moderator of the Free Church Assembly, presiding both at its ordinary meeting in Edinburgh and at its special meeting in Inverness. He was one of the original promoters of the Evangelical Alliance, and he took a special interest in the Continental Churches Died, 1849.
