From a typed note pasted on the page: "Macfarlane, John, D.D. (Princeton). Born at Edinburgh, 1798. Ordained at Ardoch, Perthshire, 1823. Translated, 1833, to Collessie. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Translated, 1844, to Dalkeith. Married, 1826, Janet Marshall Gray; and, 1854, Louisa Cecilia Smollett. Became senior minister, 1863. Died, 1875. Publication.-jubilee of the World: An Essay on Missions."
