Biographical / Historical

From a typed note pasted on the page: "Mackay, Mackintosh (1800-1873), Gaelic scholar; educated for the ministry; superintended the printing of the Gaelic dictionary of the Highland and Agricultural Society, 1828; published the 'Poems' of Robert Mackay, Rob Donn [q. v.], 1829; at the disruption joined the Free church; minister of the Gaelic church at Melbourne, 1854, and Sydney, 1856; returned to Scotland. [xxxv. 127]". "Mackay, Mackintosh, LL.D. (Glasgow). Born in the parish of EddracHillis, 1793. Studied at the University, St. Andrews, and Divinity Hall, Glasgow. Ordained at Laggan, 1825. While there he completed his great work of editing the Highland Society's Gaelic Dictionary. Translated, 1832, to Dunoon. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. After the Disruption Dr. Mackay acted for a time as convener of the Highland Committee. He was Moderator of the General Assembly, 1849. In 1852 he resigned his charge in order to visit and minister to Highlanders in Australia. Settled, 1854, as minister of a Gaelic charge at Melbourne. In 1856 he removed to St. George's, Sydney. Returned to Scotland, 1862. Settled at Tarbert, in Harris. Retired, 1868. Died, 1873. Publications.- Besides the Gaelic Dictionary , Dr. Mackay published Memoir of Robert Donn. Exposition of Matt. v. 1-10.."
