From a typed note pasted on the page: "Smyth, John Smyth, D.D. Born at Ayr, 1796. Studied at the University, Edinburgh. Ordained at St. George's, Glasgow, 1823. Married, 1825, Margaret Davidson; and, 1834, Violet Isabella Lockhart. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. In 1853 Dr. Smyth was Moderator of the General Assembly. Died, 1860. Publications.- The Forgiveness of Sins. The Popish Anti-Christ."
