From a typed note pasted on the page: "Symington, William, D.D. (Washington College, United States of America). Born, 1824. Son of Rev. W. Symington, Stranraer. Studied at the University, Glasgow, and Divinity Hall, Reformed Presbyterian Church. Ordained at Castle Douglas, 1846. Married, 1850, Christian E. M'Ritchie. Translated to Great Hamilton Street, Glasgow, 1859. Joined the Free Church at the union in 1876. Became senior minister, 1878. Died, 1879."
