Biographical / Historical

From a pencil inscription on the page: "D. James Walker, Professor Fraser, D. John Nelson, D. William Welsh". From a second pencil inscription on the page: "Walker, Murray, Hamilton, Walker, Fraser, Welsh, Nelson [illegible]". From a typed note pasted on the page: "Walker, James, D.D. (Edinburgh). Born at Carnwath, 1821. Son of Rev. J. Walker, Carnwath. Studied at the University, Edinburgh. Ordained at Carnwath, 1843. Married, 1847, Jane Hamilton; and 1853, Adamena Anderson. Became senior minister, 1876. It was a matter of regret to all who knew Dr. Walker's mental endowment and profound acquiantance with historical theology that a feeble constitution, and, in later years, a nervous prostration, prevented him giving to the Church his Cunningham Lectures in finished form, and making still larger contributions to that department of ecclesiastical literature in which he was an acknowledged authority. Died, 1891. Publications.- Posthumous.-The Theology and Theologians of Scotland in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Cunningham Lectures). Essays, Papers, Sermons, with Prefactory Memoir. Publications.- Dr. Nelson contributed a paper on National Education in America to Essays by Ministers of the Free Church, a volume edited by Dr. Hanna in 1858." From a third typed note pasted on the page: "Hamilton, William King. Born, 1816. Son of Dr. Hamilton, Strathblane, and brother of Dr. James Hamilton, London. Studied at the University, Edinburgh. Ordained at Stonehouse, 1843. Married, 1845, Christina Proud-foot; and, 1855, Frances E. Gilett. Died, 1887." From a fourth typed note pasted on the page: "Fraser, Alexander Campbell, Hon. D.C.L., Hon. LL.D. (Princeton, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen), Hon. Litt.D. (Dublin), etc. Born in Ardchattan Manse, Argyllshore, 1819, the son of the Rev. Hugh Fraser, minister of the parish. After studying at Edinburgh University and Theological Hall he was ordained at Cramond, on the Firth of Forth, in 1844. In 1846 he was appointed Professor of Logic and Metaphysics in the New College, Edinburgh, and, in 1850, married Jemima Gordon, daughter of William Dyce, Aberdeen. In 1856 he became Professor of Logic and Metaphysics in Edinburgh University, in sucession to Sir William Hamilton. He retired in 1891. From 1894 to 1896 he was Gifford Lecturer on Natural Theology in Edinburgh University. Publications.-Essays in Philosophy. Essays, Philosophical and Miscellaneous. Philosophy of Theism.
