From a typed note pasted on the page: "Wilson, John (1785-1854), author the 'Christopher North' of 'Blackwood's' and professor of moral philosophy at Edinburgh; educated at Glasgow University and Magdalen College, Oxford; M.A. Oxford, 1810; contributed to Coleridge's 'Friend'; called to bar at Edinburgh, 1815; joined editorial staff of 'Blackwood's Magazine,' 1817, and, with John Gibson Lockhart [q. v.], was its main support; elected on strength of his tory principles professor of moral philosophy at Edinburgh University, 1820; contributed to 'Blackwood,' 1822-35, his 'Noctes Ambrosianae' (some of the earlier numbers being by other hands), in which he figured as 'Christopher North' and James Hogg as the 'Ettrick Shepherd'; resigned professorship, 1851. His works were collected by Professor Ferrier, 1855-8. [lxii. 107]".
