From a typed note pasted on the page: "Wylie, James Aitken (1808-1890), protestant writer; educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, and St. Andrews; entered Original Secession Divinity Hall, Edinburgh, 1827; 'renewed the covenant' in Edinburgh, 1828; ordained, 1831; sub-editor of Edinburgh 'Witness,' 1846; joined Free church of Scotland, 1852; edited 'Free Church Record,' 1852-60; LL.D. Aberdeen, 1856; lecturer on popery at Protestant Institute, 1860-1890; published miscellaneous works. [lxiii. 237]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Wylie, James Aitken, LL.D. Born at Kirriemuir, 1808. Studied at the Universities, Aberdeen and St. Andrews, and Divinity Hall, Original Secession Church. Ordained at Dollar as Secession minister, 1831. In 1846 Dr. Wylie resigned his charge in order to remove to Edinburgh and be associated with Hugh Miller in the editorship of the Witness. In 1852 he was admitted by the Presbytery of Edinburgh as a minister of the Free Church without a charge. From 1853 to 1860 Dr. Wylie edited the Free Church Record, and in the latter year he was appointed lecturer in connection with the Protestant Institute. Died, 1890. Publications.- Modern Judea compared with Ancient Prophecy. Scenes from the Bible. Ruins of Bible Lands. The Seventh Vial. The Papacy (prize essay). Pilgrimage from the Alps to the Tiber.
