From a typed note pasted on the page: "Brown, Charles John, D.D. Son of Alexander Brown, Lord Provost of Aberdeen, whose father, Rev. William Brown, was minister of the Secession Church at Craigdam. Born at Aberdeen, 1806. Ordained to Anderston Church, Glasgow, 1831. Married Jane Bannatyne Wright. Translated to Edinburgh, New North, 1837. Signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission. Became senior minister, 1860. Dr. Brown was Moderator of General Assembly in 1872. In the Ten Years' Conflict he took an active part. Died, 1884. Publications.- The Divine Glory of Christ. The Ministry, being Addresses to Students of Divinity. The Word of Life, being Selections from the Work of a Ministry."
