From a typed note pasted on the page: "Burns, Islay (1817-1872), theologian; educated at Aberdeen and Glasgow; D.D. Aberdeen, 1763; minister of Free St. Peter's, Dundee, 1843-64; professor in the Free Church College, Glasgow, 1864-72; wrote memoirs and works on church history. [vii. 422]". From a second typed note pasted on the page: "Burns, Islay, D.D. (Aberdeen). Born at Dun, Fofarshire, in 1817, the son of the Rev. W. H. Burns, parish minister of Dun, and afterwards of Kilsyth. Having studied at the University of Aberdeen, and at the Glasgow Divinity Hall, steps had been already taken from his settlement in St. Peter's, Dundee, in succession to the Rev. R. M. M'Cheyne, when the Disruption occurred. The Free Church Assembly instructed the Free Presbytery of Dundee to complete the settlement, and Mr. Burns was ordained on 7th June 1843. Married, in 1845, Catherine Sarah, sister of Professor David and Dr. C. J. Brown. Elected Professor of Apologetics and Systematic Theology in the Free Church College, Glasgow, in 1864. He made frequent contributions to the British and Foreign Evangelical Review, the Catholic Presbyterian, etc. He died in 1872. Publications.- The First Three Christian Centuries.
