Autograph Letter Signed from Lyon Playfair to an unidentified recipient, 2 April 1869
Scope and Contents
Autograph Letter Signed from Sir Lyon Playfair to an unnamed correspondent, discussing the education of teachers, and a pamphlet on a parliamentary bill on the subject. Dated 2 April 1869.
Begins: "Dear Sir | I am much obliged to you for your Pamphlet, & agree with you that there is a serious deficiency in the Bill in not securing a Practical Proof of Teaching Power." He finds the recipient's pamphlet "clear & decided as to the Evil", but not "very explicit as to the remedy". He apprehends from the recipient's work, that he wishes "to join Normal School Teaching with University Teaching, but to effect this the Proposition should be clear & little burdensome to the Poor Student who has generally but small means to complete his Education as a Teacher".
