Scope and Contents
Sixty-five letters sent from Roźa Niedźwiedź to Irene J. Young and occasionally addressed to Iain Gordon Brown. The first letter expresses her happiness to learn of Irene's relationship with Reginald Brown and states that she wants to meet Irene in the summer and updates her on her career.
In the following letters, Roźa discusses her plans to go to Paris, and provides updates about her trip to Paris, asks Irene about life in South Africa, and frequently writes to Irene simply to let her know she is in her thoughts.
In 1950 she writes to Irene, expressing her happiness over Iain being born, writing "I am already proud of him" and later sends him birthday and Christmas letters as well as describing Iain's stay with her for a short period in 1969, and responding to Iain's invitation to Roźa to join him at the formal dining hall at Cambridge University. in 1973. In 1956, Roźa provides suggestions and instructions for Irene's trip to visit her in Birmingham. In a letter sent on 16 December 1971, she describes an "unpleasant" experience where she is "attacked by two youths and hit hard on the head" while waiting for bus, and describes her recovery from this. In 1973 she write of a period of ill-health spent in a hospital and a nursing home.
There is also a letter from Roźa sent to Irene's mother, Agathe Young ("Mrs Young") on 3 January 1949, thanking her for a pair of wine glasses gifted by Agathe.
