Scope and Contents

Four black-and-white photographs of HRH The Prince George, Duke of Kent's visit to Esdaile School. A note, written later by Iain Gordon Brown provides context, telling that it was tradition for the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (the position held by HRH Prince George) to visit Esdaile in the course of his duties in Edinburgh and while resident at the Palace of Holyrood house. "There was outdoor 'entertainment' for his Grace in the form of gymnastics and drama. On this occasion, Irene Young was to have performed a dramatic monologue - her school specialty- in the event of inclement weather and the Royal party's being forced indoors. As these photographs show, the Duke's visit was made in fine conditions; Irene was not called upon to deliver her Command Performance!"
