Content Description

This small fonds consists of the papers, portrait, and medals of Dr James Robert Stott, OBE, World War I Captain and graduate in medicine from the University of Edinburgh. It includes:

  1. Four First World War medals in a "Ernest Jones" box: The British Military Medal, The Victory Medal (Great Britain), an OBE Officer Badge, Military Division, and a tripartite medal with smaller versions of the three medals.
  2. Three certificates related to his service during the war: certificate of Stott's appointment as an officer, and two Royal Army Medical Corps certificates.
  3. Two obituaries (newspaper clippings) of Dr J. R. Stott, 1954.
  4. Three photographs: a standing portrait of James Stott in WWI military uniform mounted on cardboard, and two later photographs including Stott in military uniform and other people.
  5. One framed portrait of James Stott.

Biographical / Historical

Dr James Robert Stott O.B.E., B. Sc., M.D., Ch.B. qualified as a doctor in 1910 at the University of Edinburgh. During the First World War he served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.). After the war, he was a house surgeon and physician at Aston-under-Lyne Hospital, and at Kershaw's Children's Hospital, Manchester. Later he became resident medical officer at Kensington General hospital. He spent the rest of his career (over 30 years) at Surbiton, London, where he was Chairman of Medical Staff at the Surbiton Hospital, and a medical officer appointed by the Treasury. He died in 1954 in his 74th year.
