Three notebooks and two letters of John Middleton Murry

 Fonds — Box: CLX-A-480
Identifier: Coll-2097

Content Description

This fonds consists of three notebooks and two letters written by John Middleton Murray.

The first notebook contains texts written between 1915 and 1917, including an autobiographical essay and the first part of John Middleton Murry's verse drama 'Cinnamon and Angelica'. The second notebook contains the remainder of 'Cinnamon and Angelica', dated 3-24 December 1917. The third notebook contains notes on French and English literature and two journal entries, dated 19 April 1921 and 3 March 1923, describing dreams of his wife, the writer Katherine Mansfield. In the second entry, written after Mansfield’s death, he expresses his desire to remarry and have children. The journal also contains a scrap of paper with Katherine Mansfield's initials, in her own hand, above an arrow-pierced heart, with a note from Murry 'Found on my blotting paper - September 15 1921'.

The correspondence consists of two typescript letters from John Middleton Murry to Mrs Laura Brough, concerning an invitation to Murry and family to visit her home, 'The Old Coastguard' in Abbotsbury Dorset, where Murry had lived during his second marriage to Violet Le Maistre.
