Scope and Contents

Correspondence and papers relating to Armand Leslie, M.R.C.S., surgeon and Chief Medical Officer who died in Sudan under the command of Charles George Baker. This collection includes many letters to him, some from his sister Jane Young Elvira Leslie and his brother John Leslie, as well as further correspondence after his death between Elvira, John Leslie, and others.

Some material (newspaper cuttings, parts of a rough diary, and correspondence, including two letters from Viscountess Strangford) cover his service as a surgeon with the Turkish army during the Russian-Turkish war, 1876-1878. His death at the battle of El-Tel in Sudan in 1884 is described in a newspaper extract. There are also two portrait photographs. 75 items. 1865-1900.

The collection also contains papers relating to Armand Leslie's father, David Leslie, M. D., of Armagh (d. 1872). They include three class cards issued to him at the University of Edinburgh, 1824-1830; five testimonials in his favour; a copy of his will, etc. 17 items. 1824-1873.

Finally, there are obituary notices of Armand Leslie in The Lancet, 8 March 1884 (p. 452) and in the British Medical Journal, 23 February 1884 (p. 393).
