Correspondence of John Barker of Langshaw

 Fonds — Box: Dk.2.40-42
Identifier: Coll-2160

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the correspondence of John Barker of Langshaw, including five letters from his widow, 1881-1837. Includes a one-page typescript description of the letter by the original seller. Barker was a "gentleman farmer", and the correspondence is addressed to Mr Wyatt of Foolow near Bakewell, who was in the lead-mining business. Barker comments on his farming, crops, cattle and sheep, and discusses his investments and economic matters of the first part of the 19th century. The letters also include reference to his domestic life (two of his children died as a result of "too copious bleedings" during a fever, 5 June 1829), and the education of his children. Upon his death after an illness circa 1830, his widow took over his interests.
