Scope and Contents

This collection consists of three volumes containing notes from lecture in agriculture given by Professor Andrew Coventry, first Professor of Agriculture in Great Britain (appointed in 1790), taken down by James Stirling, 7th laird of Garden, Stirlingshire, and grandson of mathematician James Stirling.

The first volume starts with "Lectures on Agriculture Introductory. Lecture 1st Dec 4th 1799". Stirling records how Professor Coventry presents the history of agriculture, enlivened by recent publications, annotating his book list: "Those Books marked with a cross are those shown in the Class by Dr Coventry..." On climate he observes that "Loch Ness never freezes... from the quantity of sulphur impregnated in its waters." Continuing on soil types; manuring and sowing to pasture; draining.

Volume two includes a fragment of a letter on agricultural themes ("as the weather shall become soft...") addressed to "J & R Stirling, Garden Nr Stirling", signed by Charles Stirling. There is also a "Plan of a Coricle" with a diagram of the basketwork construction of the little water craft. This volume contains lecture notes ("Agriculture (Morning) arable lands. 3d best succession crops"), and reading notes taken in situ "Lint and Flax... Lord Kaim", as well as more diary-like observations on practical successes and failures.

Volume three contains notes on Anderson’s Agriculture (fencing, enriching soil with lime etc), The Gentleman Farmers, Farmer’s Magazine 1806, Mortimer’s Husbandry.
