Warrant with seal, appointing Peter Hume Brown Historiographer-Royal for Scotland

Scope and Contents

King's Warrant declaring Peter Hume Brown Historiographer-Royal in 1908. The Great Seal of Scotland in red wax is attached to the centre-base of the sheet, using reg and blue ribbons.

Bulk of the warrant is written in the hand of John Charles Strettell Miller, and reads:


"Edward the Seventh by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas King Defender of the Faith to all to whom these Presents shall came Greeting! Forasmuch as we taking into Our Royal consideration that the Office of Our Historiographer in Scotland is now vacant and at Our Gift and Disposition by the death of Doctor David Masson and We being well informed of the abilities and good endowments of Peter Hume Brown, Doctor of Laws Professor of Ancient History and Palaeography in Our University of Edinburgh whereby he is well qualified to fill the said Office Now Know Ye that We have constituted ordained and appointted like as We do by these presents constitute ordain and appoint the said Peter Hume Brown to be Our Historiographer in Scotland, to have, hold, exercise and enjoy the said office during his natural life Giving and granting unto him the said Office with the salary pertaining thereto together with all rights liberties privileges benefits and advantages whatsoever pertaining and competent to the said Office, need and want, or which did at any time by gone pertain to the same Provided always that the said Peter Hume Brown shall not be entitled to claim any compensation for any reduction which may hereafter be made in casualties, fees and profits of the said Office . In Witness Whereof we have ordered the Seal appointed by the Treaty of Union to be kept and made use of in place of the Great Seal of Scotland to be appended hereto. Given at Our Court at Saint James's the fourth day of May in the year one thousand nine hundred and eight and in the eighth year of Our Reign."


"The King's Warrant is impressed with a stamp duty of 10 s[hillings]"


"Per signaturaur manin L. D. N. Regis supra scriptaur."


"Written to the Seal and registered the twenty second day of May 1908. J. C. Strettell Miller. Senior Director of Chancery"

Above the Seal is written:
"Sealed at Edinburgh the twenty second day of May in the year One thousand nine hundred and eight. James Macdonald, W.S. Depute Keeper of the Seal. £80 Scots."

Vellum sheet c 75x 52cm, folded in several places. Large seal attached (c 15cm diameter), housed in metal canister. Seal bears surface cracks, but remains in one piece.
