Photograph album showing people and locations in Perthshire
Scope and Contents
This is an album containing 63 mounted and 14 laid in albumen print photographs dating primarily to the late 1850s and 1860s, which mainly depict community life, people and locations in the Blair Castle area of Perthshire. It also include some portraits, and a few photographs of Funchal and Pico Fort (São João Batista Fort), in Madeira.
A label on the inner front cover has the owner’s name, William Stewart Arnott, who might have been a merchant in Perth. The identity of the photographer is unknown but presumed to be Stewart.
The album also includes an autograph letter sent by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott to William Stewart Arnott, dated 21 September 1811. It was sent in response to a letter Arnott had sent Scott, along with a poem, following Arnott’s reading of Don Roderick.
