The cottages in the foreground, presumably on the edge of the gardens behind New College and Mound Place, have been demolished. The terrace of Ramsay Gardens, visible beyond the cottages, originally consisted of three houses built by Allan Ramsay, the painter, son of the poet, between 1760 and 1780.

This may be a view of the fronts of the cottages (later demolished) shown in the views of Ramsay Gardens in Coll-1167/B/27/1/15-16. If this indeed the case, the sloping street must be Ramsay Lane, looking east towards the Free Church (new New College). See Coll-1167/B/27/2/5-6.
