Title should read "Waverley from North Bridge". Old Jail (site of St. Andrew's House). Portico of the (old) Royal High School and the Burns Monument in the background. Coll-1167/B/27/12/5 the next one, is from a badly damaged negative plate, but must have shown the adjacent right hand view from this same point. Handwritten title on the original envelope containing the corresponding glass plate negatives was written by Alasdair Geddes.

The inscription on the original envelope of the negative plate read "Reid's Court - from Street" but the pieces have obviously been put in the wrong envelope. There are ten small pieces besides the larger bits. See Coll-1167/B/27/5/5, to which the inscription apparently applies. The image is of Waverley and North Bridge.

The North British Hotel was completed in 1902, about eight years before the date of this photograph. Note the spire of the Tolbooth Church (Victoria Hall), the dome of the Bank of Scotland on The Mound, New College towers, and the Castle.

Scope and Contents North British Hotel, former General Post Office building, Nelson Monument and also part of the old Jail (not visible in Coll-1167/B/27/12/7), as well as North Bridge with a tram. In both Coll-1167/B/27/12/7-8, note the Register House on the extreme left. Also, Waverley Market Hall - low building rising above glass roof of station. This was a large and fundamentally empty hall, used for shows of all kinds, circuses and sometimes dramatic entertainment. At certain times, there were flower beds...
