Optic nerve, c.1953
Scope and Contents
lateral view of head showing the right eye and its blood vessels. Detailed drawing of right internal carotid artery (ICA) branching from the common carotid artery and continuing up into the cavernous sinus (CS), where it gives off the ophthalmic artery (which supplies the eye with blood). A direct (Type A) caroticocavernous fistula is shown; an abnormal direct communication between the intracavernous ICA and the cavernous sinus, resulting in shunting from the ICA to the CS. Enlarged draining veins are depicted, likely due to retrograde flow from the CS into the ophthalmic veins. The right ICA is shown to continue superiorly, giving off the anterior cerebral arteries and the main branches of the anterior part of the circle of Willis.
