Scope and Contents

The hospital first opened in 1860 at no 7 Lauriston Lane. In 1863 it moved to Meadowside House at the foot of Lauriston Lane. In December 1890, following a typhoid outbreak, the hospital moved again, this time to Morningside College, Plewlands. Meadowside House was demolished. In 1895 the present hospital at Sciennes Road was opened.

In subsequent years the hospital purchased houses in Rillbank Crescent and Rillbank Terrace. Some were adapted for use by the hospital as consulting rooms and as a nurses’ home. Others were leased out to tenants. In 1934 no 16 Hope Park Terrace was purchased and converted into the Forteviot Home for very young children. The hospital also acquired houses in Colinton, Loanhead, etc, which were leased out.

The following documents and correspondence deal with the purchase and maintenance of allthe above buildings, except for the maintenance of the main hospital building (see LHB 5/31).

Most of the letters are addressed to Messrs Henry Scott.
