Scope and Contents

Proof copy of printed letters relating to Thomas Erskine of Linlathen (1788-1870). Contains pencil annotations instructing to "preserve", "omitt", "begin here", etc., for each letter. Contains less content than William Hanna's 1878 published edition, including letters with Thomas Chalmers, the portrait (frontispiece), the preface, and the expository writing providing context to each letter. However, some letters within this volume are omitted from the published version - including a number with Thomas Carlyle.
