Bibles belonging to Andrew Melville (1545-1622), Principal of St Mary’s College, St Andrews University
Scope and Contents
Incomplete printed Hebrew Bible [Old Testamant], belonging to Andrew Melville (1545-1622), Principal of St Mary's College, St Andrews University.
The two volumes cover Psalms, Proverbs, Daniel, the "five Megilloth", Job, Ezra, Chronicles, and Joshua - Kings.
Both volumes are quarto, and were rebound in January 1984 with quarterbound leather. The bookplate of Principal Rainy is on the right end board of each.
They bear the signature 'Andreas Meluius' on the title pages, and latin annotations in his hand throughout.
Volume 1: Right end board also has an insert that records that the volumes were both shown in an exhibition in Glasgow in 1901.
Left flyleaf bears inscription 'Ex Dono Reverendissimi D. D. Laurentii Charteris May 6th 1699 Charles Charteris'
Additional extended Latin description of contents on right flyleaf, signed R. J. 1748.
Volume 2: Additional signature of 'Andreas Meluius' adhered to left end board, and loan label of the Scottish Exhibition, Glasgow, 1911, laid in that applies to both volumes.
Right fly leaf bears inscription (upside down):
'Ffor Tho[mas] Jo[hn] Moore in Bridge Water Summersetshire by way of London England'
'This Book was borrowed by me Sam[uel] H. who have left it w[i]t[h] Mr Math[thew] Wall to be fiven to Mr Maitland [th]e Right Owner thereof'
'Thomas That expuinuas L That That That That That'
It is unclear if this final inscription is nonsensical, or some kind of Garden Path grammatical quirk.
