Aerial oblique view of Salisbury, 1600, c.1914
This appears to be an aerial oblique view, enlarged from a section of larger map, which seems to have been of around 1600 (dated by artisan-mannerist strapwork cartouche). Not to scale. Shows regular, more or less gridiron lay-out of town which was established on a virgin site in the 12th century, by Bishop de la Poer. This plan shows canals not yet filled in, quintain in Market square, and Market house."
Aerial oblique view of Salisbury Chequers, 13th century, c.1914
Salisbury Chequers in the 13th century. Salisbury's street plan was laid down in the early 13th century and the parallel street formation, running north-south and east-west resulted in the formation of chequer squares and is an example of medieval town planning. Detailed on reverse label: Lent to Cities Exhibition by Architects War Committee. Cities Exhibition No. possibly 11 (as seen on right hand side lower corner).
Aerial oblique view of Salisbury Chequers as they developed, c.1914
Salisbury Chequers as they developed, showing haphazard building over gardens. Original aerial oblique pencil and wash drawing on linen backed paper. Cities Exhibition No. possibly "No 44" as found marked on lower edge of right-hand side. Reverse Label "Lent to Cities Exhibition by Architects War Committee".
