Glass plate negatives, from which photographic prints were made, these prints forming part of Patrick Geddes' "First Planning Survey of Edinburgh". The glass plate negatives were made especially for the survey of Edinburgh as an example of Geddes' method to demonstrate, in visual form, phases in the development of Edinburgh over several critical historic periods. In this way he attempted to make the connection of the present with the past.

Likely to be a duplicate reproduction of an engraving by unknown artist [possibly James Gordon, c. 1615-1686], showing the "Plan of Edinburgh eactly done for the original of the famous De Wit, 1647". The item is marked "Printed and sold by John Bowles at te Black Horse in Cornhill. 58."

The item is marked "Printed and sold by L. Smith in his shop in the West End of Exeter Change in the Strand".
