A collection of poems by the celebrated Persian lyric poet Shams-al-Dīn Muḥammad "Ḥāfiẓ" of Shiraz (ca. 715-792 A.H. /1315-1390 C.E.). This volume, probably copied in the 11th century A.H. (broadly, 17th cent. CE), is richly illuminated and includes twelve highly finished miniatures in Indian style.

Scope and Contents The compendium of poems of Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥafiẓ Shīrāzī, the famous 14th century poet. This copy begins with the qaṣīdahs, which is a somewhat unusual. In the earlier copies, the ghazals come first. The collected ghazals of Shaykh 'Abd al-Wāḥid Thānīsarī, who claimed his descent from the celebrated Imām Ghazālī. He flourished during the reign of the Mughal Emperor 'Ālamgīr, and poetically styled himself "Waḥshat."

A poem in praise of London, composed during his travels in Europe, by Mirzā Abū Ṭālib Khān Hindī Isfahānī (d 1220 or 1221 A.H., 1805-1806 C.E.).


It contains a portrait of the author "Engraved by Ridley from an original picture painted by Russel," for the European Magazine. The present manuscript was copied for the owner, James Anderson, by George Swinton.

Scope and Contents The Ḥadīqah (a poem on the unity of God, other religions subjects, and ethics), with an elaborate commentary upon the same. The poem is by celebrated poet and philosopher Shaykh Abū al-Majd Majdūd, or Majd al-Dīn 'Sanāʼī' b. Ādam, commonly known as Ḥakīm Sanāʼī who was born at Ghaznī towards the later half of the 5th century A.H. (11th century C.E.). A commentary on the difficult verses in the Qaṣīdahs of Imām Afz̤al al-Dīn Badil Ibrāhīm b. 'Alī Najjār "Khāqānī" of Shirvān who died at Tabriz, between 582 and 595 A.H. /1186 and 1199 C.E., by Muḥammad bin Dāūd (here Dād) ‘Alawī Shādiyābādī. Copied in the village of Tamwarlī in Tilingānah, India.
